The Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve is located physically in the Department of Granada, 18 km south of the oldest city founded in 1524 by Europeans in the Americas: The colonial city of Granada. The reserve has 578 ha in the Core Zone (850 to 1345 m) and the buffer zone of 6.644 ha, from 40 meters on the shore of Lake Nicaragua to 850 meters. Located in the southwest Pacific Nicaragua.
The Colossus of the South Pacific of Nicaragua is an extinct volcano of Quaternary volcanic time, right in the center of the volcanic mountains of the Great Depression Tectonics in the Central Pacific Coast of Nicaragua, with a rise of about 20 million years, with of the geologically younger regions.
HOW CAN YOU GET?
You can arrive by 3 different directions.
From the north, out of Managua to the city of Granada, and then on to the Km 50 bound to the junction Nandaime The Guanacaste.
Or Catarina leaving Managua, arriving at the same junction The Guanacaste.
And if from Rivas, pass Nandaime and then headed for Granada, until the same junction The Guanacaste.

TRAILS:
the Puma
It is the longest trail, difficult and challenging of the Reserve. It consists of 4 km elliptical circle amid landscapes and dense vegetation intact and viewpoints on the highest points of the reserve, the view is spectacular in all of Lake Nicaragua. You need a guide to do it in about 4 hours. It ranges from 900 to 1222 m.
the Crater
It is the second largest, fully circulate around the crater covered with dense forest. It consists of 1.5 km in length that leads to the dwarf forest, and vents with spectacular views towards the north where there is Granada, the islets, Lake Apoyo and Masaya Volcano National Park. Is self-guided and takes about an hour and a half. It ranges from 900 to 1150 m.
the Ocelot
It is a journey above the 1.240 m that lasts 2 hours. This is a route for those who want a strong but short course, leads to the 2 best viewpoints and given the main crater collapsed in an avalanche in 1.570. Other views of the peninsula is completed Asese islets of Granada and Lake Cocibolca and the highest peak in the Mombacho to 1.345 m.

Flora
Nicaragua in its 132.000 square kilometers, representing 0.13% of the land out of the oceans and has 6% of the planet's biodiversity. Part of the biological wealth is protected in 19% of the country of their 84áreas protected. The Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve is a jewel in biodiversity.
Fauna
The Wildlife is very rich in diversity. The main thing was the discovery of endemic species (species that occur only at that site worldwide) of species such as the salamander (Bolitoglossa mombachoensis) and orchid (Maxillaria mombachoensis). This reserve is home to 173 species of birds (37 species), 36 species of reptiles, 10 amphibians and 47 species of mammals.
In insects consists of several thousand species including a butterfly (Napeogenes Tolossa mombachoensis), which is endemic across from other areas of Nicaragua.
In birds, consists of 186 species, of which 129 are resident species, 46 are migratory in the north, 6 are resident and migratory, 2 migration south, and 3 in transit.
